With initiative of few alumni under the leadership of our President Mr.Yajnanarayana, it was decided to take up the project to develop greenery in KREC/NITK campus during one of the meetings held in Bangalore during July,2003. As a follow up action funds were collected from members and work was started to plant saplings in campus.
| |
| PHASE I: During July/August, 2003 about 3500 plants were collected from different sources and varieties like Badam, Sampige, Cherry, Mahagony, Mongium, Amla, Jackfruit, Neem, Honge, etc. were planted on sides of roads, around hostel blocks, quarters area, temple road, open vacant spaces, etc. Lot of care was taken
during summer months to water them and now one can enjoy seeing elementary school kids, NITK students and Professors plucking cherry fruits to enjoy them by eating along SBI Road, around SJA, canteen and school areas.
PHASE II : Next rainy season (June/July, 2004) work was continued and it was possible to plant about 7000 saplings and more varieties like Teak(1000nos), Silver Oak(1000 nos), Sandalwood(200 nos), Honge(800 nos), Neem(300 nos), etc were planted in large quantity and you can see plants coming up in all the areas of the campus. Further 150 coconut saplings were planted in NITK beach area with an ambition to develop that area as a model garden. Now it is quite pleasant to see these plants coming up. |
PHASE III : As continuation of program, during June-July,2005, 350 coconut plants and 4000 other varieties( Teak-2000 nos, Jetropha Carcus-1000 nos, Fruit trees-1000nos) have been procured and planted in beach, around hostels, inside compound wall, etc.
Additional Fecility: Earlier two years watering was done by using 2 nos of drums mounted on hand carts which were being moved manually. As plants grow requirement of water had increased and necessity to arrange for mechanized system had arisen. Accordingly the necessity to procure a tractor with tanker and trolley and to use it for watering and for keeping the campus clean. During Silver Jubilee meet of 1980 batch alumni who were present were so pleased by this project and decided to contribute and present Tractor,Trailor and water tank by contributing about Rs.800000/- ( Rupees Eight Lakhs only ) to institute. Tractor with required accessories was procured in February,2005 and presented to Director, NITK .on behalf of Alumni Association and now being used in the campus. One can see the effect of better watering with improved growth of plants.
