Silver Jubilee Celebrations of 1986 Batch

National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK)
Surathkal, Srinivasnagar-575025, India

http://www.nitk.ac.in/

A tradition of celebrating Silver Jubilee of our graduation has been established
by the batch of 1974 when they met in 1999. This meet was also attended by
many alumni of earlier batches and being a part of that meet I felt very happy and
realized what it means to meet friends after a gap of 25 years and also visit the
alma mater. Since that time this tradition has been continuing by celebrations in
December of every year. 2011 belongs to us the proud batch of 1986! We have
to not only need to keep up the tradition, but also try and do something unique on
completing Silver Jubilee of our graduation.

Proposed Program:

A two day Get-Together on Fri 23rd and Sat 24th Dec 2011 along with spouses
and children. This will be convenient for most of us and our friends abroad in
particular. We need to start on Friday because it will be a working day and we
can visit our departments and meet various people. Weather will also be good!

Fri 23rd Dec 2011: Venue: Silver Jubilee Auditorium (SJA)

Stage function to be presided over by the NITK Director
Presentation on batch of 1986 by few of us (to be identified in the area of
industry, Govt, Academia, entrepreneur, social etc)
• Felicitation of our teachers and staff. Those still working, those retired and
staying near to NITK could be invited.
• High Tea
• Presentations by few of our batch mates & flash-back to 1982-86.
• Lunch (with faculty, staff invitees)
• Visit to departments and other amenities of the campus.
(During this time a local trip can be arranged for spouses and children)
• Dinner at NITK Beach (alcohol is not permitted) or Red rock residency
(next to NITK Beach, where alcohol is permitted) with administrators,

HOD’s and invitees.

Sat 24th Dec 2011: Venue: Additional Teaching Block or Main Seminar Hall

Meeting and interaction with UG and PG students
Visit to Campus
Lunch (with administrators, HOD’s)
Some games and fun at Guest house lawn
Vote of Thanks
Tea

All are then free to plan on their own whatever they want to do!

Accommodation:

Accommodation can be booked at our Guest House. About 25 double rooms
are available. It can also be arranged in the hostels (along with bedding) where
you stayed or new hostels. This accommodation will be at nominal charges.
Accommodation can also be booked at some good hotels in Surathkal or
Mangalore. The cost of accommodation will have to be borne by the alumni by
making direct payments.

Event Expenditure

The major expenditure heads are the Felicitation charges and the food and local
transportation charges. Based on the statistics of earlier years and accounting for
inflation the contribution per person will be about 4000-5000/-. This is assuming
that about 125 alumni will definitely participate and those who will not be able to
participate will at least contribute 1000-2000/- for Felicitation.

We should all feel proud that ours was the only batch
to have contributed an amount of about Rs. 9.0 lakhs to the Institute for the
Golden Jubilee Year! In keeping with this tradition of doing something different
we should institute awards for best outgoing students from the six branches
which were there at our time. The award will be given from the interest income on
a fixed deposit fund. We presume that all of us will be willing to contribute to this
fund over and above the conference event expenditure! This has not been done
by any batch till now!

The major changes since 1986 at KREC/NITK include.

UG 6 branches to 9
PG few programs to 29
Very nice swimming pool at last!
Flood lit basketball, volleyball courts
1+7 floor EE & IT Dept
1+ 5 floor Mech Dept
Big civil engg dept block
Now every dept has its own block including basic sciences
From 5 boys hostel to 8 + Mega block (3 towers for 1512 students)
From hardly about 50 girls to over 500 girl students and 3 girls hostels
Lots of state of art equipments in many departments
Budget for Engineer (tech fest) and Incident nearly Rs. 50.0 lakhs each
4 lane with few flyovers at Surathkal, Kulur, Kottara etc.
An under pass (subway) to connect east and west side of highway
In excess of 125 companies visiting for campus placements
Very good health care centre
Very good guest house
Most importantly we are now an Institute of National importance and
governed by the Act of Parliament.

What has not changed!!
• SAC and week end movies
• Samudra Darshan (Main building canteen)
• Students studying only during exams
• NITK run messes (few messes have been outsourced)
• The Shiva temple on the beach (renovated)
• We continue to claim to be the top REC / NIT!!

I request confirmation of your participation in the event by 30th May 2011 which
would help organizing the event. I also request you to help connect with as many

batch mates as possible and get this message across to them!
One final request is to forward this mail to our classmates who are not in mail list
or their mail id has changed and you know the missing or changed id.

Incident ’12 – Students Appeal

12:49 PM in Events, News, NITK, NITK Alumni by NITK Alumni Office

We the students of NITK, Surathkal (formerly known as KREC) will be organising our annual cultural festival INCIDENT in the last week of February. The festival, presently in its thirty second year, has grown to become the landmark cultural meet of the region. Spread over five days, the festival attracts participants from all over the nation and has become a platform from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents outside their regular domain of expertise.

Over the years, the festival has grown rapidly in popularity and stature which is reflected by the widespread participation from all over the country. Last year saw Incident play host to more than 20000 people, from over 200 colleges, participants coming in from every corner of the south. The ProNite, since its inception, has seen performances by top Indian and International music artists like Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Kunal Ganjawala, Nikhil Chinappa, DJ Oliver Moldan, DJ NYK and bands like Led Zepplica, MotherJane, Euphoria, Indian Ocean, Galeej Gurus, Parikrama. Our previous sponsors include Reliance, Wipro, Dell, BMRCL etc. The scale of these events and the massive audiences that they have drawn show that Incident has truly come of age.

This year, Incident ’12 promises to be bigger and better than its predecessors. We aspire to up the ante by coming up with new events like Classical fusion and I Care- a social initiative by the students to help the underprivileged community and to do our bit to save the depleting environment, the likes of which have never been seen before.

To a large extent, all this is made possible because of alumni support and corporate sponsorship. The alumni of our esteemed college, with their active participation in the festival, have been instrumental in making Incident what it is today. We plan to make Incident ’12 one of the nation’s biggest and best cultural festivals. We believe that this dream, although optimistic, can be realised, if we receive strong alumni backing. It is for this reason that we request your active participation in Incident ’12, for which we would be very grateful. The sponsorship brochure, which talks in detail about the various events and partnership opportunities at Incident ’12, is attached herewith.

We would be happy to provide you with any other information that you may require. Your support will go a long way in encouraging the student activities of the Institute.

RESPONSE TO THE NATIONAL TIGER ESTIMATION REPORT

10:25 AM in NITK Alumni by Ullas Karanth K.

The result of the national tiger estimation exercise conducted over the past couple of years has been released on 28-3-2011.

It reports an increase in adult tiger numbers to 1636 (1706 including Sunderbans), up from the previous estimate of 1411 tigers in 2007. This is an increase of 16% compounded over 4 years, suggesting that the previous decline of tigers has been reversed. However, since full details are not yet available as to how these tiger numbers have been arrived at, it is not possible to give an expert opinion about the new numbers. However, since various threats faced by tigers do not appear to have diminished in last four years, it is difficult to explain the claimed reversal of the decline of tigers. Moreover, going beyond such country wide estimates, a more important issue needs to be addressed: Most of India’s reproducing tiger populations are now concentrated in 10% of all tiger habitat that holds 90% of all our tigers. These 40 or so ‘source populations’ are under grave threat and need to be ecologically monitored annually using intensive camera trapping (as prescribed in the proposed Phase 4 of the national estimation, which is yet to even begin). Monitoring of tracks by Forest Guards is not a substitute for such reliable monitoring using camera traps or DNA sampling as has already been proven earlier in places where tigers vanished even as guards did similar patrol-based monitoring. To me the most serious flaw in the present government effort is the basic futility of trying to generate all-India level tiger counts once in 4 years, even while ignoring critical task of intensively monitoring key source populations year after year.

The time has now come to switch from these once in four year national estimation (termed Phases 1 to 3) and focus intensive camera trap or DNA monitoring of tiger source populations so that we can track the fate of individual tigers, and estimate survival and recruitment rates to gauge how each of these populations is faring. If we do not shift to such focused, intensive monitoring approaches, we are at serious risk of losing more and more key populations even while we celebrate supposed ‘increases’ from these national counts (it is well known that half the tiger reserves lost most of their tigers in the past decades despite these national counts!).

On a more technical note, the full process of how these tiger numbers are generated for individual tiger populations and landscapes, has not been made public in a scientifically acceptable manner. Only one scientific paper, which explains only a part of this protocol, has been published in 2011, based on data from the last round of estimation in 2007. While this is not the place for a technical discussion, I see serious deficiencies in the methodology which has been published.

For several years Centre for Wildlife Studies has monitored tigers rigorously in Karnataka State over an area that holds about 15% of the country’s tigers. We camera trap a 3000 sq km area, every year, photographing more than 100 tigers in a population of about 250. On the basis of these data we believe that the tiger population in Karnataka is holding out, and even increasing in some areas like Bhadra and Kudremukh because of good work by government and NGOs. We believe that similar intensive monitoring of all key source populations can be easily done to generate similarly useful results across the country. This would not cost more than what the present ‘once in four year’ national estimation costs. However, to achieve such progress, government must give up its present monopoly over tiger monitoring and bring in outside expertise and resources in order to ensure greater reliability, transparency and credibility in monitoring the fate of our national animal. I hope this long delayed Phase 4 of tiger counting will happen before it is too late.

In the meanwhile we have been receiving many mails & calls from our alumni friends volunteering for the cause and also with many valuable suggestions. While we are deeply moved by these kind gestures and are trying our level best to accommodate each one of these inputs, under the current constraints we might not be able to implement many of them. However, these suggestions could be the basis for our future Meets, where we can expand this format in a practical manner, incorporating all the inputs we received.

A good turn-out of Alumni Members in this Meet would impress upon the Governing Council of NITK Alumni Association on the topic of formation of an Alumni Chapter for North India Region. If so, NITKAA North India Chapter Office Bearers could be finalised on this occasion.

We look forward for an active participation from all NITK Alumni from this region for the 9th April 2011 Meet, which would pave way for a stronger NITK Alumni network in this region.
